Suggested itinerary

Day 1: Pickup Vehicle & Around Darwin:

Arrive in Darwin and pick up your vehicle from the depot. Visit some of its great attractions, and great eateries or café's. Well attended markets & sensational sunsets cap off a great day.

Refer to the Travel Pack for highlights and recommended campgrounds

Day 2: Darwin to Kakadu National Park (or Mary River National Park)

Begin travelling from Darwin to Kakadu National Park along the Arnhem Hwy, Along the way you will pass the Mary River Wetlands region. The wetlands are overlooked by most people as they rush towards Kakadu which is unfortunate because it is one of the most populated biomass regions in the world and offers stunning wildlife and unique cruises including the Jumping Croc Cruise. Depending on your interests spend the night within the Mary River Wetlands and explore (or fish) the lesser known attractions in this region (4WD only). Alternatively continue into Kakadu and spend the afternoon exploring this sensational National Park capping it off with a sensational sunset at Ubirr.

Refer to the Travel Pack for highlights and recommended campgrounds

Day 3: Around Kadadu - Northern Section

Spend the day exploring the northern sections of Kakadu. In addition to exploring the stunning rock art and bushwalks of northern Kakadu (best short walks in Kakadu) your 4WD gives you access to Billabongs, campgrounds and a croc free swimming hole that you otherwise wouldn't be able to access. Alternatively spend the day on a guided tour of Arnhemland (extra cost)

Refer to the Travel Pack for highlights and recommended campgrounds

Day 4: Kakadu National Park - Jim Jim Twin Falls

A great day exploring Jim Jim & Twin Falls. These two falls are the most advertised in the Top End and are definitely worth visiting; Access to both falls is via a 4WD track with the last 9km being rough, corrugated and sandy in sections. Jim Jim Falls cascades over 150m straight off the edge of the Arnhemland escarpment . The drive into Twin Falls requires you to drive across Jim Jim Creek & access to Twin Falls gorge is by boat shuttle service (fee applies), Please note the Jim Jim Falls walk is suitable for people who are fit and can manage uneven terrain (large boulders, often slippery with sand).

Refer to the Travel Pack for highlights and recommended campgrounds

Day 5: Around Kakadu - Southern Region

A day you will remember exploring the most spectacular attractions of Kakadu. In the Southern Region your 4WD allows you to enter and explore the spectacular waterfalls and clear plunge pools of Maguk, Jarrangbarnmi or Gunlom. Beautiful remote gorges that are arguably Kakadus best attractions and access is limited to people with 4WD's.

Refer to the Travel Pack for highlights and recommended campgrounds

Day 6: Kakadu onto Katherine

Another great day exploring the remaining attractions in the southern region of Kakadu before leaving the park and heading towards Katherine. In the Gunlom Region of Kakadu there are some great walks around Yurmikmik and a picturesque waterfall at Ikoymarrwa Rock Hole. Depending on what time you leave the Park take the time to stop off at historic Pine Creek and a swim at picturesque Edith Falls before arriving in Katherine.

Day 7: Around Katherine (Katherine Gorge)

This morning drive the 30km to Katherine Gorge to explore the gorge and surrounds. The twelve kilometre Katherine Gorge is carved through the Arnhemland plateau, and the spectacle of the river, shear cliffs and rock art make this an excellent place to explore. Photos do not do this area justice. There are four ways to explore the Park, bushwalking, helicopter flight, boat cruise or canoe. The best way to see Katherine Gorge is a combination of two.

Day 8: Katherine to Litchfield

Depart from Katherine and start travelling back towards Darwin stopping off at the spectacular waterfalls and scenic watercourses of Litchfield National Park. Litchfield is THE most attractive park in the Top End. It’s spring fed year round swimming holes make it a must visit destination for anyone touring the Top End. Your departure time from Katherine will depend on how many of the 13 attractions you want to explore and/or swim at in Litchfield.

Day 9: Litchfield National Park

A free day to relax and explore more of Litchfield National Park. Spend the day exploring more of the remaining waterfalls, croc free swimming holes and remote attractions in the south of Litchfield National Park (4WD only). Cool off with a swim at any or as many of the 7 swimming holes. Unlike Kakadu and other spots in the top end, waterfalls flow all year round at Litchfield. Another special day exploring Litchfield National Park.
